3 Easy Ways to Get Moving at Work

For the ongoing Balance Bar® Summer Shape Up Challenge, we’ve partnered with personal trainer Holly del Rosso and our own trusty Balance Ambarsadors to give you a different 30-minute workout each day. We also know that in a busy life packed with work, family, social and recreational commitments, some days finding 30 minutes in our hectic schedules can feel like a mighty challenge! So, how can we multi-task throughout the day to ensure that we don’t skip out on exercise altogether? Well, with just a little motivation it can be easy to sneak a little exercise into your workday.

Study after study shows that Americans do too much sitting, much of it at work, and that a sedentary lifestyle correlates with a variety of health issues. The good news? We’ve put together a simple list of three ways to get moving during your workday. Just like taking a Balance Bar® break, adding a little light exercise can help break up those 9-to-5 doldrums and add some fun and variety to your day. It doesn’t take long to form some new habits that will help you shape up this summer and every season to come!

1. Leave the conference room and hold a walking meeting.

During the summer, it’s easy to stare out the window and daydream about being outside instead of cooped up in the office. Well, maybe it’s time to move the office outside! Instead of heading to the conference room for your 2 o’clock, grab some fresh air by heading outside for a walking meeting. Not only will you turn 30 minutes (or even an hour) of sitting into walking, but you might also be more productive. There is growing scientific evidence showing that we learn and think better while engaged in physical activity. Now that’s a win-win!

 

2. Walk to lunch instead of driving.

You know that favorite sandwich shop of yours that’s not only delicious, but just a few-minutes away from work? Well, instead of driving, take a 15-minute walk there and back. Grab a few hungry co-workers and turn it into a fun midday social outing. In addition to getting a steady 30 minutes of walking in, you’ll also be surprised how refreshed you feel for the rest of your afternoon.

 

3. Take the stairs, and take the opportunity to hand-deliver a message.

We’ve all heard the benefits of taking the stairs before, and for good reason: they are like a mini-gym built right into the office! You don’t need to run all 1,576 stairs of the Empire State Building to feel the benefit either. Taking the time to hand-deliver a few messages to your co-workers each day can strengthen your muscles and your relationships. And again, breaking up the desk drudgery for some heart rate-elevating strolls and climbs can make your day more fun and social.
