A Heads Up On Those Holiday Coffee Drinks

When the holidays roll around, so do those special holiday flavored coffee drinks at your local coffee shop. They seem to be especially tempting half way through those busy, long shopping days. Unfortunately, they can be high in fat and very high in sugar and just one 16-ounce minty, mocha drink can contain up to 520 calories and a whopping 78 grams or more of carbohydrates. When you’re trying to keep your blood sugar balanced and increase your body’s ability to utilize its energy stores, this is definitely a drink to avoid. But, every year I get asked the best way to make adjustments so they can still be part of a balanced diet.
My answer includes the following tips.
1.  Start by ordering a 12-ounce size.
2.  Order it made with non-fat milk, then add a splash of half and half at the coffee bar.
3.  Order half the amount of syrup pumps to dramatically cut the carbohydrates.
4.  Order without whipped cream.
5.  Enjoy it with a Balance Bar® to help steady blood sugar levels already within a normal range, so you have plenty of energy for the rest of your busy shopping day.
My favorite holiday coffee drink is an eggnog latte. Yes, it’s going to be high in sugar and fat, but I order it with half eggnog and half non-fat milk, then limit myself to only three or four for the entire holiday season. I do love them, but I am always glad when they are gone after the holidays.
