Balancing A Gluten-Free Diet

These days, many people seem to be following a gluten-free diet. Those who suffer from celiac disease or gluten sensitivities can benefit by eliminating gluten—a  protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.

Unfortunately, food suppliers seem to have jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon as well, marketing hundreds of gluten-free foods to shoppers. But it’s important to note that “Gluten Free” on a label doesn’t necessarily mean a food is healthy. In fact, many gluten-free cookies, cupcakes, breads, bagels, cakes and mixes, cereals, granola, crackers, pasta, noodles and other items still include high levels of processed carbohydrates—which can also be high in fat. And when too many carbs creep back into your diet, it’s easy to get thrown off balance. High carbohydrate diets, even if they are “gluten-free,” can spike blood sugar and elevate insulin, preventing your body from burning stored body fat for energy. Even worse, excess glucose is converted and stored as fat.

The best way to benefit from a gluten-free diet is to eliminate carbohydrate foods that contain wheat, barley and rye, and replace them with fruits and vegetables that are naturally gluten-free. It’s important to maintain a healthy balance of carbs, protein and healthy fats. But by eliminating gluten and minimizing high-glycemic carbohydrates, you can experience maximum health benefits from a balanced, gluten-free diet.

Soon, you’ll also be able to indulge in delicious, gluten-free nutrition bars.
