What is the formula to calculate the 40-30-30 ratio?

Ready for a little math? Okay, here we go:

  • Grams of Protein x 4 = Calories from Protein / Total Calories x 100 = Percent of Calories from Protein (round to the nearest multiple of 5)
  • Grams of Fat x 9 = Calories from Fat / Total Calories x 100 = Percent of Calories from Fat (round to the nearest multiple of 5)
  • 100 – Percent of Calories from Protein – Percent of Calories from Fat = Percent of Calories from Carbohydrates

Want an example? Let's look at Original Yogurt Honey Peanut. First, the nutrition values we need:

  • Protein = 15g
  • Fat = 7g
  • Total Calories = 200

Now for the math:

  • 15g x 4 = 60 calories / 200 calories = .30 x 100 = 30% calories from protein (no rounding necessary)
  • 7g x 9 = 63 calories / 200 calories = .315 x 100 = 31.5% calories from fat, which rounds to 30%
  • 100 – 30 – 30 = 40% calories from carbohydrates

As you can see, there is a tolerated threshold for rounding. It's kind of fun, isn't it? Go ahead, you know you want to check that candy bar you've been thinking about.

What does Low Glycemic Index mean?

Let's get scientific for a second. Glycemic Index (GI) is a measure of the effect of carbohydrates on blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates that break down quickly during digestion release glucose (sugar) rapidly into the bloodstream and have a high GI, while carbohydrates that break down more slowly release glucose more gradually into the bloodstream and have a low GI. A lower GI (approximately 55 or less) suggests slower rates of digestion and absorption of the foods' carbohydrates.

What does that mean to you? Simply put, Balance Bar products will provide lasting, sustained energy.

What is the difference between Total Carbohydrates and Net Carbohydrates?

Total carbohydrates represent the actual amount of carbs contained in a product.

Net carbohydrates are calculated by taking the total number of carbohydrates and subtracting fiber and sugar alcohols. The number that is left represents the carbs that impact your blood sugar levels.

Some people, particularly those with Celiac disease, have difficulty digesting gluten and therefore should try to avoid it.

What is fractioned palm kernel oil?

Fractioned palm kernel oil is an ingredient we use in the yummy confectionary coating on our bars. To get technical, palm kernel oil can't be used as-is because it's a liquid oil and not a solid fat (which is what we need for our coatings). The process known as fractionation separates the liquid parts (or fractions) from the solid parts, but without using the hydrogenation process that produces trans fatty acids.

Essentially, fractioned palm kernel oil is our preferred fat source for confectionary coatings because it contains zero trans fat, unlike hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oils. See, you really do learn something new every day!
