Create Active Fall Traditions For Your Family

Family traditions are memorable events that can take place year after year. When I think of fall traditions, I often think of the family drive in the country for apple picking or choosing that perfect pumpkin or Christmas tree. But why not create some new traditions for your family, with a focus on physical activities, healthy diet, and life changing events you can enjoy for years to come.

Fall is the ideal time to change up exercise programs to strengthen your legs for ski season. If your family are skiers, draw up a workout calendar and monitor everyone’s progress. It’s a great way to increase family exercise while anticipating the ski season to come.

Determine the sports your family enjoys and make Sunday afternoons active days. Play touch football, a game of soccer, ultimate frisbee or frisbee golf, or head out for bike rides or hikes and enjoy the beauty of the fall season. Gene and I call those days “Most Excellent Adventures”. Since we have no children, we often include a niece or nephew, let them decide on the activity, and name the day after them, like “Max’s Most Excellent Adventure”. It allows the children to become more involved and can create memories to enjoy for a lifetime.

Fall is also a great time to tighten up your family’s diet. With Halloween behind us but more holidays on the way, November is the ideal time to follow our Fat Flush plan as often as possible. When eating a balanced diet, follow the 40-30-30 ratio of carbohydrate, protein, and fat at each meal to help stabilize blood sugar to maximize energy and burn fat for fuel. Fat Flush meals are extreme fat burning meals and simply contain little or no high-glycemic carbohydrates like pasta, potatoes, bread, or processed carbohydrates. The 40% carbohydrates in Fat Flush meals are predominately low-glycemic, high fiber vegetables, fruits, legumes and grains. You can find a variety of these meals in our book,The Formula. Watching your diet closely before the holidays can also act as damage control for occasional splurges during the holidays.

When you focus on fun physical activities and healthy dietary adjustments, you can begin to enjoy quality, life enhancing traditions you can enjoy for years to come.
