Finding Balance in the Morning

As a work-at-home father of five children (all under the age of ten!), finding balance is key to my success in parenting and in business. As you might imagine, every morning will come at you like a freight train if you’re not planning ahead.

As soon as we wake up, we head down to feed the baby and start breakfast while the kids dress themselves for school. We used to choose clothes for them, but now we simply advise on whether the temperature calls for long or short sleeves. They get some leeway, and we enjoy a few extra moments to ourselves in exchange.

I’d love to say that we have a fresh-cooked breakfast every morning, but with our busy schedules that’s not always possible. We find balance by cooking things like pancakes, French toast and waffles in larger batches and freezing them in portions. It saves time in the morning because it’s already done and there are no pans to clean. If we don’t have something prepared ahead of time, there’s always convenient, nutritious foods like yogurt, fruit and cereal to ensure the kids are well fed before heading off to school.

We also pack school lunches the night before school days. Trust me, it’s much better to discover you’re out of lunch essentials at 6 PM than 6 AM! We portion out lunch items and each boy gets to pick what they’d like. The Balance bare® bars are a popular snack to include, and we’re happy to see the boys enjoy such a nutritious option.

Once the kids get on the bus, well fed and well prepared, we get on with our day. By planning ahead, we stay ahead of the game and unfazed. The transition to work is easier because we start in a calm state without leftover morning tasks to occupy our thoughts. Even if you need to wake up 15 minutes earlier, starting off your morning on the right note ensures the rest of your day will have a little more balance.
