This is the time of year many of us look forward to getting out of town for a spring break. Vacations provide us opportunities to enjoy a relaxing break from our daily routine and gain a total body and mind tune-up. But travel can be stressful, so it’s important to keep your health and well-being a top priority. You’ll enjoy your trip even more by eating balanced meals, getting plenty of rest and including exercise in your activities.
Eating balanced meals can help stabilize blood sugar and improve energy throughout your day. To make eating balanced meals easier, we travel with a cooler backpack. It’s packed with a stick blender, whey protein powder and a bag of macadamia nuts so we can enjoy 40-30-30 smoothies with fresh fruit for breakfast. We also always pack a supply of Balance bars and a reusable water bottle, to eliminate the temptation for unhealthy snacks and drinks. Once at your destination, you can shop local grocery stores and enjoy healthy picnic lunches wherever you go. Travel coolers can help keep your diet as normal as possible, and offer a big bonus for your vacation budget—not eating out for every meal is a big money saver.
One of the best recommendations I can give you when traveling is to get plenty of rest. When checking into any hotel, request a “quiet room,” away from freeway noise, ice machines and elevators. Have a pack of antibacterial hand wipes and sanitize the room to your comfort level. We pack our own pillows with a set of blue pillow cases so they don’t get mixed up with the hotel pillows. A quiet, clean room and sleeping on your own pillow can create a more positive sleep environment and more restful sleep.
When you make daily exercise a way of life, it can become an enjoyable part of your vacation. It’s easy to get a quick workout no matter where you are. You can enjoy invigorating walks or runs while exploring local parks, beaches or new cities. Or you can get a great workout in your room. Just pack some portable fitness gear like exercise bands, a jump rope or even your favorite exercise DVD. Challenge all of your family members to wear a pedometer and track their activity. And, remember to pack your workout gear, sports shoes and sun block.
So, get the most from your spring break this year and come home feeling relaxed, refreshed and healthier than ever.
