With summer in full swing, it’s a great time to get your family off the couch and outside for some exercise. Family fitness starts with the entire family—mom, dad and the kids. But someone has to be in charge, be the organizer, the coach, the team leader who makes an activity plan, then encourages, motivates and sets the example. Obviously, that’s where you come in. Set a goal of getting your family more active, healthier and in shape while enjoying more quality time with them.
Begin by taking advantage of the long summer days and cool evening temperatures. This is a great time for after dinner neighborhood walks, bike rides or simple summer activities like throwing a Frisbee or running around the park catching lightning bugs. Make weekends and vacations special by including visits to amusement or water parks, beaches, lakes and pools, or museums, festivals, county fairs and carnivals. You can increase everyone’s activity with family hiking, mountain biking, golf, Frisbee golf, tennis, or training for a charity run or walk. With so many great opportunities for exercise this season, there’s bound to be something the entire family can enjoy. You might even make new friends with other active families by participating in classes at your local YMCA or community civic center.
By taking the time and effort to make family fitness a priority this summer, you can begin to develop family fitness habits that last for a lifetime. And don’t be surprised if your kids’ friends want to join in too. The family that’s always out and about is bound to become one of the coolest and healthiest families on the block.
